Emma as Violetta
For her role as Violetta in Giuseppe Verdi’s famous opera La Traviata, Emma Abbott stands formally posed before a short, stone wall and a richly textured curtain at the edge of the stage to her left. She faces the camera, although her body is turned slightly to the left. Her eyes have a warm and expectant look, and her lips are slightly open. With her right elbow comfortably bent, she holds a clutch of ten long-stemmed, open roses at her waist. Her left hand is barely seen behind the flowers. Her floor-length dress has a modest train. Its bodice is cut in a low oval and bordered with lace. The sleeves end just above the elbow. The bodice is tight through the waist and the skirt is wider at the hips and hangs straight to its border. The skirt has a 12-inch border with of lace layered on to the skirt fabric. The train is made of the same lace and fabric design. Emma’s hair is up and her hat is a wide-brimmed affair, with a high crown covered in artificial flowers. It acts as a frame to her pretty face and her neck.
