Emma Abbott and Paul Castle sing the roles of Paul and Virginia in Victor Masse’s opera. The stage backdrop shows a woodland scene, and they pose as if they are walking on a wooded path toward the camera. Castle has his left arm around Emma’s waist pulling her close to him. They stand beneath a piece of tarplin or other stiff fabric, which Castle holds above his head with his right hand, and Emma holds in the same manner with her left hand. He looks directly at the camera, his eyes smiling. He wears a full mustache that covers the ends of his mouth. He has a deep forehead and his hair curls at the crown of his head and around his ears. He wears a blousy white shirt with sleeves to his wrist and an open neck. A wide, stripped cummerbund that ties at his back and cotton stripped shorts with the bottoms rolled up to the middle of his thighs. Emma’s head is tilted to her right, away from Castle and she looks skyward. She wears a plain, pale-colored dress with a high neck and long sleeves. The bodice ends at her hips and the skirt is full to her ankles. They both wear sandals, laced to the ankle.
