In this old, hand-colored photographic postcard of the Havana, Illinois riverfront, a rear-wheel steamboat—perhaps named the Bald Eagle--has docked at the riverbank at an approximately 45 degree angle, stern out in the channel. Smoke and steam bellow from several smokestacks on the long, slender riverboat, approximately three stories tall above the waterline. In the foreground and middle distance numerous buildings, sheds, shacks, and loading docks are visible. Some float like moored pontoons near the water’s edge. Two medium-sized deciduous trees occupy the right center area of the image. The far side of the river is a thick, verdant forest. In the lower left foreground of the image a portion of a corrugated metal roof of a building dominates. Two wooden utility poles are visible. No humans can be discerned. A caption at the top center of the image states, "Bald Eagle at Landing, Havana, Illinois." | |
