1896 Photograph of Wellman
and Dwire Tobacco Company in Quincy

This is an 1896 black and white photograph of the large brick building housing the Wellman & Dwire Tobacco Company in Quincy. Mother Tolton and her two sons worked in a tobacco factory soon after fleeing to Quincy. There are three full stories above street level, with at least two levels below street level—visible because the hillside drops down from the street level. Plain windows are evenly spaced throughout the entire exterior of the structure at all levels. There also appear to be one and a half smaller floors in the space under the large, steep roof. A cupola with windows on each side sits in the center of the roof peak. Down the hill behind the main building, a smaller two-story brick annex is visible. In the background a tall, thin smokestack points skyward. In the foreground in front of the main building an old fashioned utility pole with three horizontal crossbars sits.
